Sometimes, people with Autism have unexpected behaviors. It might make you feel apprehensive or like worship has been interrupted. How do you make these situations less unpredictable while supporting the person with Autism? Oftentimes, we have these feelings because we don't understand and the unknowns make us fearful. There are a few reasons someone with Autism might have disruptive or distracting behaviors. It is important to know that the person is likely not intending to do scary things or seem rude. Most often, the person with Autism is having a hard time feeling comfortable with the overstimulation and may be trying to fit into the environment as much as they are comfortable. So let's try to understand better and get past our own misconceptions to a place of compassion and equity.
